Above the water air compressors are used in situations such as firefighting where getting a fresh supply of air is crucial to getting the job done.

 Air compressors are also used in surface supplied diving. Surface supplied diving delivers air to a submerged diver through a long hose. The air compressor itself usually remains above the water on a boat or solid land.

 Pneumatic tools use air compressors as a lighter alternative to power tools. Pneumatic tools, or air tools, are often cheaper and safer to use and maintain than comparable power tools. Pneumatic tools are popular with DIY types as well and manufacturing environments.
